Week 5 Reflection

The main thing that stood out to me this week that I learned was more about visual communication.  When I was at the Timbers game I was dressed in a long tight black skirt, a purple sweater, and my sparkly blinging shoes...in my mind I looked professional yet super cute. (Hello I was at the Timbers game...Jeremy Hall plays for them...of course I wanted to look cute haha) But, I was getting a lot of attention for what I thought was due to the credentials around my neck and being in with the media. In my mind I thought people might have believed that I was a big broadcaster or something. After the game one of the reporters who is a little outspoken and very opinionated to say the least (we don't exactly get along) went off on me about presentation and how what I was wearing was giving off a different form of communication. She explained how when people would look at me or talk to me it was an immediate "looks" thing rather than what I was talking about or saying. It was really interesting...I wasn't sure if she was being rude or what but she had no problem telling me what she thought. She said that my looks will only get me to about 30 and then what...I looked at her and went off! I can be very opinionated too...I said that I am me and I have a strong personality and that if I wanna dress a certain way I am not gonna change me just because of her. I can still have a brain. I didn't want to bring this up but I brought up Erin Andrews and yes she is known for her looks but she is still a good broadcaster...it was definitely an interesting point of view and I did take it with me because I do understand what she means by "how I am visually communicating" BUT I am always gonna be me!

Day 13

Thursday, July 14, 2011

So I was working soccer camps this week so KOIN actually came out and interviewed me and some of my teammates/coaches for the World Cup and I got to help with that so it was fun getting to "show off" what I do to all my friends !

12-3pm

Day 12

Tuesday, July 12, 2011

Today was just the usual day. I had to simmer down from Sunday because it was just way too much fun. I told them that I want to do more things like that. I definitely have come to realize that I am more of a person who would want to go out and do interviews rather than the one at the building who broadcasts from here. (I'm a people person!)

3-11pm

Day 11

Sunday, July 10, 2011

TODAY WAS THE BEST DAY EVER!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! EVEN BETTER THAN THE PORTLAND TRAILBLAZER CONFERENCE!!!!!!!!!!! I got to go to the Timbers/Sounders soccer game! Not only was it an insane game to watch but I was with the media so I got to stand ON the field with the media. It was AMAZING. I even got to do a live broadcast (it wasn't aired obviously..haha) but I am in the process of making a video to give out after this internship so it was perfect! I even got to go to the press conference after with John Spencer (the coach). SO cool...

12-8pm

Week 4 Reflection

This week when I was in the back room with all the behind the scenes people I realized how important communication is in this business. They are constantly talking to the broadcasters about when they're on air, if there is something they need to know, breaking news, problems, etc. When I was in the back they actually came across a problem where Dan's earpiece wasn't working and they needed to tell him he had to do something different with his broadcast and he couldn't hear them so it was HECTIC! They were freakin out and had to run somebody over there to tell him what to do and I wasn't even a part of it and I was stressed out. I guess I never really thought about all the people that have to communicate in order to make the broadcast perfect. One of the guys was in the back directing the people directing the broadcasters...haha it was just a cycle of people communicating and I was so nervous to talk the whole time because I didn't want to interfere and have somebody not hear something. It was pretty funny. But, I definitely learned that you are not just on your own in broadcasting...it is a huge group of people who all work together to make one broadcast perfect!!

Sunday

Day 10

Friday, July 8, 2011

Today we did a lot of stuff on the World Cup which was really fun because that was right down my ally for soccer. I was actually able to help a lot because of my great soccer knowledge haha :)

3-11pm

Day 9

Wednesday, July 6, 2011

Today I spent a lot of time in the back room and learning how all the control work in the back room. I worked with the lady who does all the stuff with the prompter and who talks to the broadcasters. It was fun to see the behind the scenes stuff.

3:30-11pm

Day 8

Tuesday, July 5, 2011

Today was nothing too exciting. I spent a lot of time on the computer searching for videos to put in the broadcast. There wasn't anything great so it was really hard to find something not just sports related but for the "mama bear" audience that KOIN delivers to.

3:30-11:30 pm.

Wednesday

Week 3 Reflection

I really wanted to talk about my interaction with the reporter that I met. We talked for a good 30-40 minutes and she had a lot of good things and umm "interesting" things to say. I saw her in the elevator and she just goes "who are you?" Straight up. Straight face. Kind of intimidating. And I told her who I was and everything and then she started to go off about her soccer since I told her I play soccer at U.P. She said how she hated that every girl is playing soccer and now and all the parents think they're kid is the best and is going to be the best and how there is actually a small amount of girls who actually make it to the elite level. I tried to keep my cool about it all because everyone knows how much I love soccer and how I think it is awesome how many people are getting into it. BUT, then she made some good points about how parents interact with their kids sports and how kids interact within those sports. She made a good point about how parents really push their kids to be in sports and then they push them to be the best and half the time the kid stops having fun. Why? Because it stops being about fun. It just becomes competitive. We talked about how it is so hard for kids to just have plain ol fun anymore in sports. Even if a kid is not on a competitive team then they're on the "crappy" team and hey that's no fun. I don't know it was just really weird to think about it like that and it made me mad because it should be fun and is this is all because of the way we communicate if you think about it. Why can't we communicate to kids that it's okay if you're not the best and that they don't have to be the best. They should be able to just have fun, I mean they're kids...

Day 7

Friday, July 1, 2011

Today was another usual day. I definitely am super comfortable here to say the least. I feel like I am learning so much. When I went to go grab something to eat I ran into this lady who is a reporter here and she had a lot of interesting things to say...I will go into more detail in my reflection. I LOVE being able to watch things on air that I have written and Dan said that we need to get me out there infront of the camera sometime so I can have footage of me! (I hope I look good on camera) I asked Dan and Tim today how they feel about wearing makeup for the camera and they explained how it was super weird at first especially when they have to go buy it but they're over it now. They also said that because everything is HD now some of them even have to airbrush their face! A little ridiculous. lol but all so interestinggggg.

3:30-11:30 pm

Friday

Day 6

Wednesday, June 29, 2011

So today I had another chance to write a little bit of a story on Pippa Middleton at Wimbeldon but it wasn't nearly as good as my first story. I am getting a lot of practice editing video which I LOVE. It's fun getting to research what is going on and help Dan pick out what stories he should do. I am still bothered about how much time he gets on air tho....ughhhh.

4-11pm

Day 5

Tuesday, June 28, 2011

TODAY WAS THE BEST EVER! Tonight I was looking on the CBS Newspath website (like always) and I stumbled upon a Toe Wrestling Championship video that I thought was interesting. I showed Dan Christopherson and he said that I should write a story on it. Sooooo I wrote a story and edited the video. Dan took a look at it and made a few corrections and WALA! MY STORY WAS AIRED! I tried to video tape it on my phone but I didn't come out to well. I know its archived so I am sure I could get it that way but needless to say I felt really "cool" that my story was broad casted!
