Internship Assessment

I just want to start off with telling the story of how I got this internship because I thought think the connection that me and Dan had working together was mainly because of our past. As you read in the previous post Dan went to UP and worked for the Beacon. I was actually interviewing for a position in the Beacon and met a lady who had previously been a broadcaster so I explained to her what I wanted to do and she is friends with Dan and thought that it would be a good idea for him and I to get in touch.  A couple emails later I was going in to KOIN Local 6 for a meet/greet/interview.  A little later I found out I got the internship and was SO excited. At the beginning of the internship they sent out a questionnaire for all the interns to fill out and two of the questions were:

What do you see yourself doing in 5 years?

I don’t think I can answer this question because to be honest, I really have no idea where I am going to be in 5 years. There are so many things I want to do before I settle down; I want to possibly go into the peace corp and I want to travel and play soccer for as long as I can. I am not one to plan out my future, more so just a long with it; we can’t always live our lives thinking about what we are going to do, we should think about what we are doing in present time.

What do you hope to get out of this internship?

I honestly just hope that I take away something from it. Whether that is using this internship to further my experience with broadcasting or whether it is finding out that maybe broadcasting is not for me. I think that this is such a good opportunity for me to learn. We can learn something from anything we do as long as we pay attention. I mean I work at Subway and I would have never thought I would learn as much as I have from working there.

Now that it has come to the end of my internship I still agree completely with the first answer but would add the fact that it's okay to try things and not like them...that's why we do internships...to try things out !

As for the second question...answering it in present tense now "what did I get out of this internship?"
-I would say that I got to meet David Beckham and Charles Barkley...kidding! haha I definitely learned A LOT! I think that at first I was really nervous and it was difficult fully being myself but that changed real quick...I realized that being a good broadcaster is being yourself. I am an outgoing, loud, friendly, and personable person so I figured why not just let people know who I am and how I am going to be.  When I was meeting one of the head ladies I actually gave her sh** for not having enough sports on air and Dan looked at me and then at her and was like umm I didn't tell her to say that haha but hey I mean how else are you supposed to get your opinion out there and get recognized. I learned that "looks only get you till about 30 then you have to have brains too" which was interesting...one of the reporter ladies went off to me one day and I stood there took it and was so mad afterwards but realized that in every business there are going to be those people who don't like you and don't respect you and are just flat out mean. Now, I didn't expect for this to happen to me as an intern but it did and if anything it made me stronger as a person. I am me, and I'm gonna be me and no matter who says what or does what I am so determined that I won't let dumb things like that get in the way. As a communications major I also found that broadcasting is ALL communications. I mean I already know how awesome it is to be a comm major because I could apply everything now but it was also cool being able to see how it all applies to a potential job as well. A simple way of communicating can make or break a story. Asking someone a certain question wrong can make or break it. SO many factors can make or break it. I feel like there were many awkward encounters with people that I had to work through which have no taught me to deal with them much better. (I don't know if this is stereotypical of news rooms but the dudes in the back in editing an all that weird stuff...are interesting people to say the least haha). As far as where my attitude towards broadcasting, I am still trying to figure it out. I did enjoy all the times we went out to events but I don't think I could sit in a room all day writing stories I found on Newspaths and write stories on them to broadcast in another lame room. I definitely know that if I were to get into broadcasting that I would HAVE to be the one out in the world (not tv room) interviewing and interacting with people. KOIN is also not a sports channel an that is all I want to do so maybe it would take me doing an internship at a more sports specific channel...I'm not sure yet. But, I am sure that I learned so much at this internship and I will take all of this with me for future internships and jobs.

Profile Piece

As you may know Dan Christopherson attended the University of Portland and he had a wonderful experience there...

“When I pilot back in memory to those good ol’ days as a U of P student, I see myself in The Beacon office. That is, after all, where I spent most of my time.

Class? I still have a few minutes to edit this story. Hanging out with friends? Maybe on the weekend. Studying? I’ll get to it by midnight. We havea newspaper to get out on Thursday!

A quarter century later, I can still remember the hard work and the pride we put into every Beacon issue. We took our job seriously, but had a lot of fun doing it.

I remember my first assignment as a freshman, covering women’s soccer—before Merlo Field, before the Pilots dynasty. I showed up at the old Beacon office at the center of campus—where Franz Hall now sits. I hacked out the story on an ancient typewriter and prayed my editor would approve.

A year later, we had word processing, but we still had to manually paste-up the paper using exacto knives and wax sheets of copy photos.

I had to laugh when they got their first computer layout program the year after I left.

But I wouldn’t have traded my experience for anything. We had a blast and we bonded as a team on those late nights editing, pasting-u and meeting our deadlines.

During my year as editor-in-chief, I presided over the big move of The Beacon office to St. Mary’s which had previously been the campus chapel.

One of our big stories of the day was established of co-ed dormitories. We covered the issues and received some national recognition along the way.

For me, The Beacon laid a foundation in pursuing excellence as a journalist. We had the freedom to learn our craft and to make mistakes. We had the responsibility to inform and to be a voice for the campus. And did I mention how much fun we had?

That foundation helped me build a lasting career in television news, and I am proud to have played a part in The Beacon’s continuing legacy."

Week 8 Reflection

This week I met A LOT of important people. Or just people in general for that matter. I realized EVEN MORE how important communication is in this business. When I was at the golf tournament and soccer game I had to suck it up and put my nerves aside because you aren't going to get anywhere sitting in the corner too nervous to introduce yourself. When I met Charles Barkley heck ya I was nervous but you would've never known and I was able to hold multiple conversations with the guy. Some of the reporters were not so good with their communication and it relayed into their interviews...Charles is a very outgoing fun guy so when I lame-o nervous reporter wants to interview him versus a fun energetic good communications person it is quite obvious who he is going to chose. There were so many awkward situations I was put in as well with people asking who I was and why I was there (not always in the nicest way) and I had to be professional and communicate in the write manner. Even when I met David Beckham there was a reporter who was suspicious of me being in the locker room and I was SO MAD because I was clearly not some weirdo who was trying to sneak in but was actually an intern...but i held my cool and responded in a good manner. Both of these events really helped me see how important communications is with people because in all reality if you can't communicate right...you ain't goin anywhere.

So I know that I said that Monday was the best day of my life buttt....today might be better. Actually...it was better! haha Today I got to go to the Timbers vs Galaxy game. I don't know how familiar people are with soccer but David Beckham plays for Galaxy as well as Landon Donovan...two of the best soccer players ever. Not to mention David Beckham is one of the best looking people alive....I got to watch the game from the press box AND the second half I got to watch on the field ANDDDDDDDDDDDD I got to meet David Beckham....a highlight of my life that I will never forget **sighhhh***

Did I mention that the Timbers won 3-0??? The Timbers had not won a game in almost 3 months and Galaxy had not lost a game in about 2 months so it was an INSANE win !!!!!!!

Week 7 Reflection

Since this week was pretty slow there isn't much for me to really talk about. I realized how hard it is to come up with stories when there is not a lot going on sports wise for YOUR audience (which in KOIN's case is the mama bear's). Dan was making phone calls all over the place in order to get  something for the show. I learned that it is important to have good communication skills with the other stations because when stuff like this happens you want to be able to call them and have them possibly help you out. Dan is really good friends with a lot of the other stations so it is no big deal for others to send him stories. It made me realize that the business isn't as "messed up" as I thought it was. I always thought that it was just pushing and shoving to get the best stories (which it still is) but stations also like to help each other out. Most of the time each station has a different audience so it's really not a huge deal if one station tells another what story they're doing. Most of the time for KOIN they try to present it in the right way so that the mama bear audience can relate and enjoy it. Because in all reality if somebody is truly into sports they are not going to be watching KOIN Local 6 for sports...they're going to be watching ESPN and Sports Center.

Day 17

Wednesday, July 27, 2011

Today was kind of lame...haha there was nothing going on so it was hard to come up with things for Dan to talk about it the show. I spent a lot of time on the computer trying to find SOMETHING to talk about!!!

4-11pm

Day 16

Tuesday, July 26, 2011

Today the Timbers were playing Independiente so I got to go to the game and watch with the camera guy again! I love going to the Timbers games! 1, I love soccer 2, their fans are AMAZING! Sooooo naturally that was awesome :) Before and after I helped Dan write stories for the show.

3-11pm

Week 6 Reflection

This week was more of a slow week but in the broadcasting world there isn't a day that goes by that communication is not key. There was actually some miscommunication about what time I was supposed to come in one of the days.  Dan had sent me an email telling me when to come in and I only checked my email once and just went with that time. But, when I came in he wasn't there and the other broadcaster told me that I was not supposed to come in till later. I was confused because I could have swore I read the email correctly. I checked my email at the office and saw that he had sent me another email. I got really mad because I hadn't responded to let him know that I got it. I didn't understand why he did not call me to inform me. I came to realize that the way in which we communicate these days is not always the best way. Was I wrong for not checking my email every 5 seconds? Or was he wrong for not just calling me? I feel like the old ways of communicating are the best ways sometimes. How hard is it to pick up the phone and call? Now we have email, texting, Facebook, Twitter...etc. It is interesting to see where we are going with our communication and if it is beneficial or if it just adds complications in communicating...

Day 15

Wednesday, July 20, 2011

Today was also another typical day. Worked a lot with Dan on writing stories. There was a timbers game against West Bromwich and they lost 2-3 so I learned how to write a story for a loss but still make it a positive thing.  :)

3-11pm

Day 14

Monday, July 18, 2011

Today was another typical day in the office. I am starting to really get to know the people in the other departments. (Lemme tell you it's WAY more fun walking around knowing people now). I met some of the broadcasters that I hadn't met before so that was cool. Buttttttttttt ya, nothing too crazy today. :)
