Week 3 Reflection

I really wanted to talk about my interaction with the reporter that I met. We talked for a good 30-40 minutes and she had a lot of good things and umm "interesting" things to say. I saw her in the elevator and she just goes "who are you?" Straight up. Straight face. Kind of intimidating. And I told her who I was and everything and then she started to go off about her soccer since I told her I play soccer at U.P. She said how she hated that every girl is playing soccer and now and all the parents think they're kid is the best and is going to be the best and how there is actually a small amount of girls who actually make it to the elite level. I tried to keep my cool about it all because everyone knows how much I love soccer and how I think it is awesome how many people are getting into it. BUT, then she made some good points about how parents interact with their kids sports and how kids interact within those sports. She made a good point about how parents really push their kids to be in sports and then they push them to be the best and half the time the kid stops having fun. Why? Because it stops being about fun. It just becomes competitive. We talked about how it is so hard for kids to just have plain ol fun anymore in sports. Even if a kid is not on a competitive team then they're on the "crappy" team and hey that's no fun. I don't know it was just really weird to think about it like that and it made me mad because it should be fun and is this is all because of the way we communicate if you think about it. Why can't we communicate to kids that it's okay if you're not the best and that they don't have to be the best. They should be able to just have fun, I mean they're kids...
